 JOSEPH C. PHILLIPS JR.

Joseph C. Phillips Jr. composes for and conducts his large ensemble Numinous, a collection of some of NYC's finest musicians. Joe, along with the latest recording from Numinous, Changing Same (2015, New Amsterdam Records), has been interviewed and featured on NPR's Weekend Edition, the Brooklyn Rail, WNYC’s New Sounds as well as lauded on a number of year-end Top Classical Recordings Lists for 2015. His next project will be to record with Numinous in 2019 The Grey Land, a 70-minute monoopera that explores "humanity and identity through the intractable triumvirate of race, class, and power" which premiered in October 2018. Phillips has received a Jerome Foundation J Fund grant, New Music USA project grant, a Meet the Composers Creative Connections grant, an American Music Center Composer Assistance Program grant, two Live Music for Dance commission grants, and was a finalist for both the Sundance Institute Film Composers Lab Fellowship and the Opera Company of Philadelphia Composer-in-Residence. In addition to the worldwide performances of his works, including the Steve Reich Festival in The Hague, Netherlands, new works have been commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Next Wave Festival, the Kaufman Center and Ecstatic Music Festival, pianist Lara Downes, the NextNow Fest for the Invoke String Quartet, Simone Dinnerstein and the Neighborhood Classics Concert Series for Face the Music, Dave Douglas and the Festival of New Trumpet Music (FONT), Concrete Temple Theatre Company, St. Olaf College, University of Maryland, University of Denver, Edisa Weeks and the Delirious Dance Company, Take Dance Company, Maffei Dance Company, and a number of other musicians and ensembles.
